Really good movie experience

Joe and I were able to get into town yesterday and see a movie. He wanted to see Avatar again, I have yet to see it, and yet to find the desire to see it. So we compromised on seeing five movies for the price of one. We went to The IFC (Independent Film Center) to see the Five Oscar nominated shorts. The first one was about Child Slavery in India. The kid was being tortured. I almost walked out as my nerves were on edge due to the spooky goings on, but stuck with it. So glad I did, the other films weren't as depressing, in fact they were all amazing and so well done.

My thoughts are the Indian one will win the Oscar, Kavi I think it's called.

If you have the opportunity to see these five short films (they range from 18-22 minutes) then you have to do it. Well worth it and it was good to escape in five stories for a couple of hours.

Spooky happenings in BK...

So there are those that will thing I am nuts for this and those that totally believe that spooky things happen in the event of a death, so I'm going with those that i hope are the believers and the sceptics can just eff off!

Four things happened in the last few days.
1) as I was trying to nap in bed, I felt a hand on my back. It was almost a 'shove'. I turned around thinking it was one of the kids but they weren't in the room

2) I got up from that, spooked, then went to the bathroom. Now, I would just like to add that this is February and it's 25 degrees here. There was a FLY in the bathroom and wouldn't stop buzzing around my head (really irritating!!). There had been no windows open and how many flies are around February? We don't even have a window in the bathroom.

3) Later I tidied the kids toys, they had emptied the toy bin. At the bottom of the bin is a soft cloth photo album, full of family photos for the kids. It was open on the photo of my mum. Staring right up at me. That album is never open so how spooky for it to be on that one photo when there must be a dozen in there?

4) One of our speakers went out, so Joe went to fix it. He brought it out and a photo album came flying onto the floor. I was like 'what's that'? I didn't recognise it, and hadn't seen it before. It was a 'granny boasting album'. My mum had brought it over when she was here almost 4 years ago - how spooky is THAT??? It was empty, so I plan on filling it up with photos of the kids and putting it in her casket.

That is if they ever release the body. They have opened a coroners inquiry, we have been told it could take 8-12 weeks till we know anything. We still don't even know the actual date she died. Hideous. Backlog in Bristol apparently. If you plan on dying, make it outside Bristol.

So that's the latest. I'm hoping for no more spookiness, I think those four were enough for my nerves.

Snoozebowl..I mean Superbowl

It's that time of year again - the American Superbowl... I honestly have no idea what goes on in American 'football'.. (the fact that they don't use their actual feet apart from running and make us over here use the word 'soccer' still pisses me off, and I think Beckham too but that's another story). Talking of football.. John Terry.. WTF?? with a team mate's bird??!

BTW: Joe is going to the Chelsea/Man City game on Feb 27 so that should be interesting!!

Anyway, it appears that New Orleans just won. Good for them - Ellen DeGeneres will be happy and I love her, so that makes me happy.

Margaux decided to doodle on paper this week - yee haa - she obviously got bored with our walls and furniture. Here is our future novelist/Frieda Kahlo:

Oscar Nominations

I have no understanding, and no justification why there are nominating TEN best pictures for an Oscar, but keeping all the other major categories at five. It makes no sense to me, but then who am I??? I am just an english mum, living in new york, watching movies in between cleaning nappies, school runs, and fighting with locals over parking spots...

I want to keep it at five, and have a feeling, after this year, it will go back to five:
So, here are my picks for best film: (to be vindicated in approximately 8 hours)

Up
Up in the Air
Hurt Locker (I want this to win everything)
Precious
An Education

If I HAVE to add five more..
Inglorious Basterds
The Hangover
Sherlock Holmes
Broken Embraces
Avatar (only because my husband is twisting my arm for this one, I have actually yet to see it)

Who should win.... Hurt Locker... it was amazing. But then so was Up, but when does an animated film win best picture?? Who WILL win, according to my husband, Avatar...

Stay tuned....

ps - I have to say, I really miss Alison Bailes on NBC every Saturday. Whose stupid decision was it to remove their show?? She was a pure pleasure to watch and we miss her immensely in our household. NBC - WISE UP AND GET HER AND JEFFREY LYONS BACK!!! You effed up with Conan but this is fixable!!

In House Graffiti

Perhaps it's because Denim, Spencer's buddy's dad, is a fantastic street artist whose work we are so privileged to be a part of, that has influenced our children, but the last two months has produced these work of arts. One on the wall (fixable with a lick of paint) and one, tragically on our Mies van der Rohe Barcelona Ottoman (my favourite Craigslist designer purchase ever..., not so fixable). It sells for $2137, and I paid $100 for it to an Australian girl who was heading back to Sydney and just wanted it out of her apartment. Urrgh. Any advise how to fix this?!

Kids.. if you are reading this in 30 years - please know what pain your 'art' put us through!!!

nananananannananana BATMAN!!

Spencer will NOT get out of this batman costume of late... Every day, morning or night, he insists on wearing it. His buddy Denim is in on the action too. I'm hoping it's a temporary thing. But like I told him, Batman insists on clean teeth so maybe that is a silver lining to this current obsession.

Before, During and After

I can't say enough about Joe and his recent renovation in the kitchen. He transformed it. He did absolutely everything and did it to perfection. I now can see why people charge so much for kitchen renovations. The work is intense and immense and he did it all. See for yourself:
